Voice Memo Transcript Won't Copy? Why, and What to Do

By Chris B., who built Voice Memo Exporter · Updated August 2026

TL;DR

Voice Memo transcript text that won't select or copy on Mac is a known issue reported on Apple's own community forums, not something you're doing wrong. There's no official fix as of this writing. The most reliable workaround is screenshotting the transcript and using Live Text in Photos or Preview to copy it from the image instead.

What to try first

Before reaching for a workaround, run through these. They resolve the problem for some people, though not everyone, and they cost nothing but a minute or two.

  1. 1

Tap or click directly into the transcript text first

Selection sometimes fails if you try to drag-select before the transcript pane has focus. Click once inside the transcript, then try selecting again.

  2. 2

Try Select All instead of dragging

Click into the transcript, then use Select All (Command-A on Mac) rather than dragging across the text. Several people report this working when dragging does not, and vice versa.

  3. 3

Close the recording and reopen it

Back out to the list, then open the recording again. A transcript pane that did not fully load sometimes resets clean on a second open.

  4. 4

Duplicate the recording and open the copy

Use the three-dot menu on the recording to duplicate it, then open the new copy and check its transcript. Some people have gotten a selectable transcript this way when the original would not budge, though it does not work for everyone.

  5. 5

Update to the latest macOS and try again

This has been reported by users on macOS Sequoia, including as recently as version 15.5. If you're behind on updates, install the latest one before assuming nothing will help.

Why does this happen?

This isn't something you're doing wrong. Multiple people have reported the exact same thing on Apple's community forums: the transcript displays normally, but the text will not highlight, drag-select, or respond to Select All, even after closing and reopening the recording. As of this writing, Apple has not published an explanation or a fix. There's a separate, unrelated cause worth ruling out too: very long recordings, especially call recordings that run 45 to 60 minutes or more, have been reported to fail to transcribe, save, share, or copy at all. That's a length problem, not the selection bug, and the fix there is different: split the recording, or work from a shorter portion of it.

  • Reported on Apple's community forums, on macOS Sequoia including version 15.5
  • No official Apple explanation or fix as of this writing
  • A separate issue: very long recordings (45-60+ minutes) can fail to transcribe at all

In short: Transcript text not selecting is a known, unresolved bug reported by multiple Apple users, separate from the different problem of very long recordings failing to transcribe at all.

How do I copy a transcript that won't select?

When selecting the text directly won't work, this route almost always does, because you're copying from an image instead of the app's text field.

  1. 1

Screenshot the transcript, scrolling as you go

Use Shift-Command-4 on Mac to capture the transcript pane. Take one screenshot per screen's worth of text, scrolling down between each.

  2. 2

Open the screenshots in Photos or Preview

Mac screenshots save to the desktop and open in Preview by default; Live Text works there too, so you don't have to move them into Photos first.

  3. 3

Use Live Text to select and copy

Hover over the text in the image; a Live Text selection outline appears around it. Click and drag to select it like normal text, Control-click, and choose Copy.

  4. 4

Paste into your document and repeat per screenshot

Paste each chunk in order. It's still manual, but it works when direct selection inside Voice Memos does not.

The honest cost

What screenshotting every transcript actually costs

The workaround costs a little more than copying text directly, since you're switching to Photos or Preview and selecting from an image instead of a text field. Figure two to three minutes per recording once you count the screenshot, the app switch, the Live Text selection, and the paste. At 50 recordings that's two to two and a half hours. At 200, eight to ten. If you have a couple dozen memos, honestly, just do it by hand. The steps above will take you about twenty minutes and you don't need to buy anything.

  • Screenshot workaround: roughly 2-3 minutes per recording, a bit slower than direct copy-paste.
  • 50 recordings: about 2 to 2.5 hours. 200 recordings: 8 to 10 hours.
  • Neither the direct method nor the screenshot workaround produces one combined document.

If that's an afternoon you'd rather keep.

Voice Memo Exporter runs the whole thing in one pass on your Mac: every memo exported, transcribed locally, and combined into one searchable Master Transcript. $49 early access, private by design.

If the bug is hitting your whole library

If the selection bug, or the length limit, is affecting most of your library rather than one or two recordings, Voice Memo Exporter sidesteps the whole problem instead of working around it. It transcribes locally on your Mac, independent of the Voice Memos app's own transcript view, so there's no text to select in the first place: every recording's transcript comes out already combined into one Master Transcript, alongside the original audio, exportable as TXT, Markdown, DOCX, or PDF.

Questions about voice memo transcripts that won't copy.

Why can't I select or copy my Voice Memos transcript?

It's a known, reported issue on Apple's community forums, most recently discussed on macOS Sequoia 15.5: the transcript displays but the text won't highlight or respond to Select All. Apple has not published a fix as of this writing. Screenshotting the transcript and using Live Text in Photos or Preview is the most reliable workaround.

Is there an official Apple fix for the transcript selection bug?

Not as of this writing. It's an open, user-reported issue with no acknowledged fix. Updating to the latest macOS is worth trying, since Apple does patch Voice Memos issues in point releases, but it isn't guaranteed to resolve it.

Does the screenshot and Live Text workaround always work?

It's the most reliable method reported by other users, since it copies from an image rather than the app's text field, but it's slower: figure two to three minutes per recording instead of one.

Why won't a long recording transcribe, save, share, or copy at all?

That's a different, length-related limit, most often reported on call recordings 45 to 60 minutes or longer. Splitting the recording or working from a shorter portion is the workaround; it isn't the same bug as text that won't select.

Can Voice Memo Exporter get the text out even when I can't select it in Apple's app?

Yes. It transcribes locally and independently of the Voice Memos app's own transcript view, so there's nothing to select: the text comes out already as part of the exported files.

Or skip the manual version entirely.
