How to Back Up Voice Memos Before Getting a New iPhone

What transfers automatically

If Voice Memos is enabled in iCloud settings, your recordings live in iCloud and appear on the new iPhone once you sign in. Separately, a full iCloud backup or an encrypted computer backup includes Voice Memos, and Apple's device-to-device transfer during new-phone setup copies them directly. Under normal conditions, you lose nothing.

• iCloud sync on: recordings appear on the new phone after sign-in.
• iCloud or encrypted computer backup: recordings restore with the backup.
• Device-to-device transfer at setup: recordings copy across directly.

What can go wrong

The failure cases are quiet, and people usually discover them after the old phone is already wiped or traded in. None of these show a warning at the moment they matter.

• iCloud sync for Voice Memos was never turned on, so the recordings existed only on the old phone.
• Sync was on, but the upload never finished on slow Wi-Fi before the phone was wiped.
• The new phone signs into a different Apple Account than the recordings synced to.
• iCloud storage was full, so the backup you assumed existed was never completing.
• The trade-in wipe happens at the store, under time pressure, before anyone checks.

The archive-first workflow (do this before the trade-in)

The safe sequence is simple: get everything onto a Mac, get a copy out of Apple's app, verify it, and only then wipe the old phone.

   Turn on Voice Memos in iCloud settings on the iPhone

   Settings > your name > iCloud > confirm Voice Memos is on. Leave the phone on Wi-Fi and power so the upload can finish.

   Let the Mac download the full library

   Sign into the same Apple Account on the Mac, open Voice Memos, and leave it open until recordings stop appearing. Click a few old ones to confirm they play.

   Compare counts between iPhone and Mac

   Rough check: scroll to the bottom on both devices and confirm the oldest recordings match. If the Mac is missing chunks, the sync has not finished.

   Export everything out of the app into a normal folder

   This is the step most people skip. A synced library is still inside Apple's app. Create a copy as plain files: audio you can see in Finder, ideally with dates and titles preserved.

   Back that folder up somewhere second

   Time Machine, an external drive, or any backup you already trust. Now the recordings exist in three places: iCloud, the Mac, and the backup.

   Only now wipe or trade in the old iPhone

   With a verified copy outside Apple's system, the wipe is boring instead of risky.

Manual export options if you don't have a Mac

Without a Mac, you can still get copies out of the app before the wipe. It is just more manual.

   Share each recording via the share sheet

   In Voice Memos, tap a recording, tap the share icon, and use Save to Files (iCloud Drive or On My iPhone) or AirDrop to another device. Each export is a normal .m4a audio file.

   Mail long recordings to yourself as a fallback

   Attachment size limits apply, but for a handful of important recordings, email is a workable second copy.

   Accept that this is one recording at a time

   There is no select-all-and-export in the Voice Memos app. For a few memos this is fine. For hundreds, it is an afternoon.
